[REDMINE ISSUE 10] Windows ALT-TAB doen't work properly

Postby Cetan » Thu Jan 21, 2010 3:44 am

Glad you are continuing this great application! Thumbs up!

I've one problem with mRemote which is a bit annoying however:
In case focus is on mRemote and I've one or more ssh (putty) sessions active, ALT-TAB does not properly switch to another application.
It looks like it first switches to the 'internal' putty session before changing to another app then mRemote.

Does somebody have the same problem or does someone know how to fix it?

This has been an issue with mRemote for ages. I think you are correct that it is actually switching to the internal session, as you can actually send keystrokes to the window, it just doesn't come up in the foreground.

Glad I'm not the only one with this problem...

In my work I need to switch a lot back an forth and you can imagine how annoying this can be ... if it would be fixed it would make mRemote close to perfect for me!

I've looked through the code and tried some things and unfortunately, this is not going to be easy to fix. To fix it, I would have to replace PuTTY with a COM or .NET control.

This doesn't occur on Windows 7. If anyone would like to test it on Vista, I'd be interested to know if it happens there. My guess is that this only affects Windows XP. On Windows XP, the work around is to just press Alt-Tab twice instead of once to switch out of mRemoteNG.

Since this is a fairly minor issue that would take a significant amount of work to fix, I don't think its worth it at this point.

Too bad it 's complicated... it would help me a lot...

The problem with the workaround is that, with more then one internal putty sessions, using alt-tab twice does not work either. Sometimes it does not work at all I've to use the mouse once or twice to get mRemote in focus...
And in my work I use at least two or three sessions the same time.

Ah, yeah, It makes sense that you'd have to press Alt-Tab for each PuTTY window that is opened. I was only testing with one.

I found a port of PuTTY to a COM control, but it would need a lot of work before it could be used in mRemoteNG. I don't have enough experience with COM to be able to do it myself, though. It's also based on an older version of PuTTY so all the changes to PuTTY since then will also have to be applied.

If anyone out there knows someone with a lot of C/C++ COM experience, I would certainly be happy for their help with this. If not, this will be a long way off.

In vista, i don't experience this issue

I think i had to press alt-tab twice as well in xp. But, there i used the mgremote that was free, before it went commercial. So in fact that was another piece of software.

Having this issue in Windows 7 64-bit as well. mRemoteNG would be absolutely amazing if this little annoyance could be resolved.
